We’ll record and share all sessions

Sessions 1–3: The Process Start-to-Finish (April and May)
Over the first three sessions, we’ll take a hands-on approach, exploring the inner workings of the process, from introducing students to the basics of college essays to finishing the final draft. We’ll do key activities in the sessions and you’ll have the opportunity to write your own college essay using EssayQuest between the sessions.

By the end of the third session, you’ll be confident in how to use EssayQuest and will have practical tools and techniques to support and manage your students.

Session 4: Feedback and Editing (June)
In this session, we’ll focus on how to move students powerfully through the Writer phase, where they focus on tone and language. You’ll learn to give structured feedback easily, pointing students to specific activities to help them act on your comments. Whether you’re low-touch or high-touch with students, you’ll be able to adapt the tools and techniques to work for you.

Session 5: Supplementals Essays (July)
In the final session, we’ll focus on streamlining and simplifying your supplemental essay process, turning students into self-directed supplemental essay writing machines. You’ll also learn how to use our Supplemental Essay Strategy Board to sort and manage your students’ essays quickly and efficiently (you’ll be stunned at how cool it is!).

As we go through the five sessions, we’ll explore the underlying design principles in EssayQuest, based on our research and practical study of:

  • Neuroscience and Cognitive Learning Theory
  • Process and Instructional Design
  • Communication and Narrative Paradigm Theories

This will help you learn and master EssayQuest.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

If you’re like our students, you may enjoy the process so much you put even more time into it!

Barak Rosenbloom is the founder of Essay Mentors, a Seattle-area company focused exclusively on college essays. He’s mentored over 500 students in a comprehensive 1-to-1 program, delivered workshops to thousands of students, parents, counselors, and admissions officers, and trained schools and nonprofits to support their students more effectively.

For the past decade, he’s led the development of EssayQuest, an interactive system that streamlines the process for IECs, teachers, schools, and nonprofits, while making the essay-writing process easier and intuitive for students. He’s sometimes accused of being a little geeky, hanging out with PhD neuroscientists; global leaders in complex systems and organizational design; and master storytellers and communicators. He brings thirty years of intellectual exploration and practical experience to his work.

In each phase of his career, Barak has focused on creating unique, playful and effective programs to expand what’s possible for organizations and people. His work has been used in hundreds of organizations and has touched hundreds of thousands of lives.

He studied English and History at Williams College and has a Masters of Public Policy degree from the University of Michigan. For many years, Barak provided organizational consulting services to leaders, nonprofits, and businesses nationwide through his own consulting work and at the US Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. (He thought running a teen leadership program at his local ski school was a lot more fun, though!)

Welcome!

Even though we designed this course to meet the needs of professionals already using EssayQuest, anyone working with students can get the benefits.

EssayQuest isn’t conceptual, and it isn’t rigid. It’s built for the way teens work and think today...not ten or twenty years ago.

We didn’t design EssayQuest for students.
We designed it with students.

Which means no emails, no worksheets, no brainstorming activities, no books to read.

EssayQuest is centered on an online platform that guides students step-by-step through a process that cuts to the chase with sequenced activities that resonate with them, making the journey easier for them, and for you.

There are more well-known products that have been around for a long time, and we aren’t as well known, but there’s nothing like EssayQuest.

You’ll be glad you took this course whether you use EssayQuest or not—but we bet you’ll be so impressed by the difference EssayQuest can make for you and your students that you’ll want to switch.
